Into the Journey of Migos and their Impact on the Hip Hop Scene.

Migos is an American hip-hop group from Lawrenceville, Georgia, founded in 2008. Migos shortly performed as a duo while Offset was in jail for eight months in 2015 and they're going to perform as a duo in the future after the death of Takeoff.

The three members are blood-related and were raised together; Offset is Quavo's cousin and Quavo is Takeoff's uncle. So we can call the group a ''family business''.

Quavious Keyate Marshall whos better known as Quavo is the co-founder and former frontman of the hip-hop group. Offset real name is Kiari Kendrell Cephus while Takeoff's real name was Kirshnik Khari Ball.

What does Migos mean?

''Migos'' is the translation of the word ''friends'' into Spanish (”amigos”), “Migos” is an expression for a deserted house used as a trap place where drugs are sold, a nod to the type of things the trio witnessed growing up.

Quavo, Takeoff, and Offset first started as a rap group called Polo Club in 2009. Their first-ever mixtape Juug Season was released in August 2011.

In September 2016, Pusha T proclaimed that the trio signed to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music Management until Quavo cleared up in an interview with Sway that the group was close to signing Kanye's label but they never signed.

In their early days, the trio lived at their studio. In a Rolling Stone profile about Migos, co-founder of the group’s label “Pee” Thomas recalls the extreme faith of Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff in their art: “The music was crazy,” Pee remembers, “but what made me really wanna go tough for them is that they packed all their clothes and moved into the studio – literally lived there, sleeping on lounging chairs and producing music all day.”

Migos' Impact on the hip hop scene

The trio has influenced rappers all across the globe. You can notice their signature triplet flow, popularized in their breakout hit “Versace,” used by artists from Drake to J Cole and Kendrick Lamar to Chance the Rapper.

“Versace” was Migos’ tremendous breakout single. Peaking at 99 on the Billboard charts, the Zaytoven-produced song put Migos on the road. The song became more widespread when Drake remixed it. This is where Migos have their signature triplet flow recognized. A triplet occurs when three notes occur over one beat. In the case of Migos, rather than a note, its three syllables in a word of a phrase occurring on one beat. Migos has used this type of flow over and over on their albums.

Even though “Versace” was released in 2013, they had to wait until 2017 to get the attention and appreciation they deserved.

From 2014-2015, Migos released considerable mixtapes and their debut album Yung Rich Nation (Y.R.N.).

The album overall peaked at number 3 on the hip-hop charts and had good reviews. On October 28, 2016, Migos dropped “Bad and Boujee,” the first track of their upcoming second studio album. Telling this song was booming is an understatement. Peaking at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the song turns into an anthem for people all across the world.

Culture officially dropped on January 27, 2017. This immediately pushed Migos into a new status, growing their fan base and showing themselves as the three kings of hip-hop.

On January 26, 2018, the trio dropped its highly awaited follow-up to the critically acclaimed Culture, Culture II. This 24-song album confirmed Migos as a group that deserves their place at the top of the hip-hop game.
